Cinema begins over-18s screenings

A friend of mine emailed me this:

Hi guys!

Ok, so now we all know that I find it quite easy to jump on my soap box but after reading this news article last Thursday, I felt I had to do something.
I will let you read this for yourselves rather that explain it but I was furious at the way young people are being referred to and spoken about. I have emailed and asked for response and they have but the more people that speak up, the better for young people! My major issue was not necessarily the decision (although that did annoy me) but the way in which they have spoken of a significant part of society.

So, if you feel its not on too then please go to:

This is my response:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I recently read an article on the BBC news website regarding Vue Entertainment’s move to begin adults-only film screenings across the UK.

I would like to express my concerns as a Youth and Community worker regarding this move.  To ban under 18s from films that they are legally entitled to view is an  discriminatory act.  And under the age discrimination law of 2006 I would question the legality of this move .  These sorts of moves by business’ towards under 18s, however subtle, are perpetuating forms of ephebiphobia within our culture and undermining community cohesion.

I hope that Vue Entertainment will review its move towards adults-only screenings as I am sure they would not desire to perpetuate age discrimination within our society.

Yours

Paul Tilley

UPDATE****

Dear Mr Tilley,
Thank you for your email.
Please be advised that the decision to provide over 18’s screenings has been made based on customer feedback we have received.
I would like to assure you that at no time is it the intention to cause any offence to or exclude a group of customers.  The showings are being provided as an additional feature and will not be replacing family presentations.
Please be assured that your comments have been brought the attention of the management team.
We always welcome feedback and thank you for your comments.
Kind Regards,
Sarah Wadsworth
